About Finchley

Finchley is an art and design studio by Nicole Shorthouse — a printmaker, surface pattern designer, and lifelong artist raised in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi and shaped by years of travel and teaching art around the world.

Nicole creates bold, playful patterns rooted in florals, organic shapes, and rhythmic repetition. Her work blends hand-carved printmaking techniques with a modern, graphic approach — resulting in designs that feel joyful, expressive, and full of movement.

Each pattern begins by hand, from carved blocks to sketchbook drawings, and evolves into repeat designs that live across textiles, products, and creative collaborations.

At Finchley, these patterns come to life through small-batch, handmade goods, including tote bags that are drawn, printed, and sewn in-studio. The process is intentionally hands-on — celebrating texture, imperfection, and the character that comes from making something real.

Alongside her product line, Nicole develops collections for licensing and collaborations, creating versatile, design-forward patterns suited for home, lifestyle, and fashion brands.

Her work is guided by a love of color, contrast, and playful composition — balancing bold florals with structured layouts and a distinctly modern folk aesthetic.

Finchley takes its name from a London neighborhood where Nicole once lived — a quiet, creative pause between big moves and bigger dreams. Though the name is rooted abroad, the heart of Finchley is shaped by a lifelong connection to Hawaiʻi — a place that continues to influence her use of color, nature, and sense of joy in design.
